The River Cohen College Scholarship is just one of the many ways in which River Cohen Giving demonstrates the value of acting with a philanthropic mindset and working to establish opportunities that might not otherwise exist. When one considers the barriers created by rising tuition costs and other education-related expenses, the need for philanthropic action becomes immediately evident. The River Cohen College Scholarship is therefore intended to help students break down economic barriers and confidently pursue a higher education.
Benefits of the River Cohen College Scholarship
The River Cohen College Scholarship offers an array of benefits that extend beyond the eventual scholarship recipient. In addition to the $1,000 scholarship awarded to an eligible student, all applicants — as well as scholarship committee members — will benefit from thoughtful consideration of the essay question concerning the many ways in which philanthropy is capable of changing the world for the better.
The $1,000 River Cohen College Scholarship is open to eligible candidates who fall into either of the following categories:
• Students graduating from high school during this calendar year who have already earned acceptance to a college, university, design school, or trade school; or,
• Students presently enrolled and attending a college, university, design school, or trade school
“How Can Philanthropy Change the World?”
Eligible applicants must submit a brief essay discussing the following question: “How can philanthropy change the world?” This essay should be brief — no more than 500 words in total — and applicants should take great care to thoughtfully consider the potential influence of philanthropic action in addressing some of the most pressing societal issues of our time.
Applications, Submission Deadlines, and Selection Process
The essay should be submitted along with the brief application form found on this site. Eligible applicants must submit their application and essay in advance of this year’s application deadline: November 30, 2017. There is no fee required to submit an application and essay, but applicants should be aware that by submitting their application they also give consent to River Cohen Giving to utilize their essay, in whole or in part, along with their name and information for marketing and other promotional purposes.
Following the application deadline, the scholarship committee will convene in early December to review each candidate’s application and essay submission. After a thorough review, the committee will select the winner, who will be contacted in early January, 2018. Upon notification the scholarship winner will have two weeks to respond, otherwise a new scholarship winner will be selected.
